Muscanell Millworks produces solid wood flooring in Southwest Colorado, a transition zone between high desert and alpine vistas. The mill setting affords a view of the San Juan Mountains, Sleeping Ute Mountain, the Blue Mountains and the long outline of the mesa holding the rich archaeological treasures of Mesa Verde National Park.
Founder Doug Muscanell has a long history in the wood products industry. After earning a degree in forestry from Paul Smith’s College in upstate New York, he worked in every aspect of lumber milling operations, starting as a sawyer, and working into engineering equipment and plant layout for the timber industry. Eventually, he followed a lifelong dream of starting his own business in the West. For over a decade, Doug and his wife Karen Harbaugh crafted high quality wooden boxes for the fine American craft market. Doug then turned the business back towards the “milling” scene. With the influence of the meticulous quality standards incorporated in the boxes, they began producing precisely-milled, long-length hardwood flooring.
In the mid-1980’s, rustic flooring was just becoming popular- especially in the Western U.S. It was generally short length, and the more “character” on the boards, the more milling defect was allowed. With Doug’s machinist background, he believed that rustic flooring could be produced in longer lengths while still maintaining precise milling tolerances. That vision is still the driving force behind Muscanell flooring today.
Today, Muscanell Millworks is a family-oriented operation driven by a team of hardworking, conscientious people. Some of us are town kids, some of us are country folks, and we all have these things in common: a love of our beautiful corner of Colorado, and pride in producing the best quality solid wood flooring. We get noticed by key players like The National Hardwood Magazine as leaders in the manufacturing of sustainable hardwood flooring products.
Many of our crew serve in volunteer positions as firefighters, in church, and community groups like 4-H. We care about flooring, about our neighbors, and about our customers. Check out our Community Gallery and see how we are involved.
